In spite of many threats against the authentic democratic stability that exists in Honduras because of the stand of interim constitutional President, Roberto Micheletti, and of the live forces of the nation including the highest figures of the Catholic and Protestant churches, the elections that had been scheduled before the ouster of Manuel Zelaya will take place in accordance with the Constitution and following the norms of the Honduran electoral power. The intransigence of many governments and of the Organization of American States, which is contrary to international norms, has failed because of the political and institutional reality in Honduras, where the present interim administration governs following the norms of the Constitution of the Republic, with the approval of the National Congress, of the Judicial Power and the Electoral Power. No matter how many interested elements might say that this is a “de facto” government, this is not the case, because that government is following the constitutional norms of the republic. And, if it were actually a “de facto” government, history has shown that the best way to get out of this type of government is through elections supervised by important national and international observers. Certainly, there has been a change of opinion on the part of the Washington government due to the confirmation of the attitude of the Honduran live forces and, most importantly, the terrorist outrages that are taking place there. No extraordinary imagination is needed to know who is directing this terrorist subversion trying to intimidate Micheletti’s government and the people of Honduras. Those who are seriously interested in the political normalization of the Honduran nation on democratic bases are campaigning for the political parties that have candidates running in the elections of next November 29th. Those candidates had been chosen before Zelaya’s ouster by their respective parties complying with their regulations. Right now, there are governments that have expressed their intention to participate as observers in these elections, among them the democratic Panamanian government. Moreover, personalities of the democratic world have accepted the invitation to go to Honduras to watch over the electoral process and express their opinion based on what they see. Nowadays, it is in vogue to speak about “transparency” when meaning honesty. And this is what is going to be verified by the international observers, because numerous factors of the different parties involved in Honduras’ democratic life are determined to have that transparency. |
