With the unfolding of events in Honduras, it becomes clearer the serious violation of the Vienna Convention by the Brazilian government that has turned its Embassy in Tegucigalpa into a subversive bulwark against Honduras public order, since it has had for the last two months a “guest”, former President Manuel Zelaya, who arrived from outside the country with the complicity of one or more governments adjacent to Honduras. The government of Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva, which is interested in having influence over other Latin American countries, must realize the need to solve the situation immediately because it is incompatible with American International Law and constitutes an abuse of force by the Brazilian government against the sovereignty of Honduras. They will probably await the outcome of the elections of November 29th to solve this serious problem. As everyone knows, the election will take place with democratic organization, with the political freedom offered by the government of President Micheletti and with the presence of at least two governments of the region as observers, the United States of America and Panamá. Moreover, two hundred and fifty world personalities have been invited to observe this election. There are no reasons to believe that the outcome of the election will not be what corresponds to free elections, where the candidates to the presidency of the republic were chosen by the different parties before the ouster of Zelaya from the presidency. Each of those political parties is involved in an intense electoral campaign following democratic norms to achieve victory for its candidate. Whatever deficiencies there might be in this election, they would be the minimal expected because of human imperfections. But, with so much international oversight and so much national effort, there will be nothing to cast doubts over the transparency of this election. The government of “Lula” da Silva in Brazil must rectify its arbitrariness against the sovereignty of the republic of Honduras, participating in an outrageous way in a conspiracy against public order which already includes acts of terrorism, although they not be organized by the embassy. It should be remembered that in the past the prestige of Brazilian diplomacy could not even contemplate any arbitrariness against International Law like what is happening in Tegucigalpa. |
