The Conduct of Public Servants and of Those who Request Their Services

Seriousness and good conduct in government are indispensable for the basic prosperity of any country. It is necessary that those who are in power, whatever might be their jurisdiction, be fully aware that they must discharge their duties with honesty, rectitude, and respect in the sense of sensibly collaborating with the civil society. The government official or employee who does not adhere to his duties not only fails to be a good citizen but is also a bad government employee or official. The public has the right to be respected, just as that public has to respect those who serve them in public office.

When there are many responsible public employees and officials it is difficult that there be people who dare to encourage corruption offering illegal bribes with the purpose of getting benefits that go against morality and the good operation of the government at any level.

Corruption should be permanently condemned by all citizens who are conscious of what honesty represents in every aspect of the government. And this goes from the lowest to the highest echelons.

The public should encourage honesty in public employees and officials exalting their merits and insisting on the need that everyone should want to imitate the honorable employee or official not only to guarantee his position but also to satisfy the demands of his own conscience as a law-abiding citizen.

Society should know how to treat government employees and officials who are entitled to be treated well without this being a gift but an acknowledgement of their condition of good public servants. In many instances there are individuals who are angry or hurt because of the behavior of some government employee or official, and someone who had nothing to do with that situation has to put up with verbal hostility when that individual comes to them for service. It is indispensable that good manners, courtesy, and civism inspire the conduct of every public servant and of those who request their services.
