Defense Cuts
in the U.S.A.
Hopefully the government of the United States of America will not reveal with full details the cuts in its armed forces in terms of the new general budget for the nation. Officially, the President in an appearance at the Pentagon, which was broadcast to the world by television, announced cuts of 80,000 soldiers in the Army and of 20,000 men in the Marine Corps in view of the new military strategies. The eight-page document made public Thursday did not specify which weapons systems or other programs would be cut or when. It was said that this information will be made public after the Administration releases its 2013 budget in about three weeks.
Under the new strategy, the U.S. armed forces would no longer be required to be capable of fighting and winning two wars at once against two aggressor nations. This requirement dates from the so-called Cold War. Under the new norms, the Pentagon would have to be prepared to fight one major war while conducting a holding action in another conflict. However, it seems that the Navy will keep its current fleet of eleven aircraft carriers and accompanying warships.
The announcement made by the President at the Pentagon, with Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and the military commanders by his side, indicates that this is something that has been studied carefully, as it should. Let us hope that no more details about the new military strategy and American resources are given out because the U.S. enemies, especially China and North Korea should not be informed about details having to do with the indispensable American defense.
For the time being, because of the information officially given by the President of the Republic, Barack Obama, we must think that this is a formal announcement, well-studied by all the authorities who know all of the details and who have the technical and professional background necessary to carry out any plan of this nature.
It is almost certain that the fate of world freedom and the indispensable strengthening of the United States of America will be decided in Asia.
