It seems that the electoral campaign in the United States has entered a very important stage with characteristics that are more significant than in previous ones. The nature of the president in office, who is the candidate for the Democratic Party, determines an exceptional interest in the way this campaign is unfolding with aspects that are different to previous campaigns. President Obama’s nature is different to that of the other candidates. And, more than different, we should say very different.
We are still many months away from really knowing what will be the outcome of this campaign. However, everything indicates that we are in the presence of a very strong campaign that might cause divisions within the parties and that might strengthen certain ideological trends that are not very clear yet.
Some time has to go by to know what will be the definitive path of President Obama’s campaign. It is not only a question of consolidating himself in the White House but also of giving special characteristics to his political mission as president whose reelection, if it were to happen, would take place surrounded by serious doubts about the state of the nation.
We should hope that during the unfolding of this debate there are no clashes that might weaken the minimum national solidarity that is necessary so that this campaign does not bring about divisions, not only unnecessary but also detrimental for the country.
After August, when it is known who is the Republican Party candidate, the campaign will be more defined and it will be extremely important and necessary that the voters, especially those identified as independents, pay close attention to the debates between Obama and the Republican candidate so that they can reach an informed decision.
It has been said repeatedly that a candidate has to get at least forty percent of the Hispanic vote in order to win a presidential election. That is why it is very important that Hispanic voters regardless of the party to which they belong decide, after careful consideration, who is the candidate that they prefer and whom they feel will be the best one for the country in these difficult times that the nation is going through.
