Spain Mourns the Death
of Fraga Iribarne
One of the most prestigious politicians and statesmen of the Western world, Manuel Fraga Iribarne, died in Madrid last Sunday, January 15th. With his death, Spain has lost one of its most valuable political and cultural figures. In the morning of Monday, January 16th, the King and Queen of Spain visited the Fraga Iribarne home to express their condolences to his children. This was a testimony of solidarity with the sorrow of the family which is shared by the whole country.
Fraga Iribarne’s remarkable achievements are part of sixty years of history in Spain, beginning when he was named General Director of the Institute of Hispanic Culture and throughout the years in high political positions in Galicia and all of Spain, being an important factor in drawing up the Spanish Constitution still in force. He was Minister of Information and Tourism from 1961 to 1969 and Second Vice President of Spain. The Popular Party, that has considerable political significance in the country, was founded by Fraga Iribarne. This Popular Party is the one that just won the election in Spain.
He was such a statesman that one of his adversaries, Socialist leader Felipe González, said about him that “He has the State inside his head”.
During his long political career, Fraga Iribarne was active in different fields of endeavor in the government. He was an outstanding Spanish Ambassador to England.
From an academic point of view, his formation has been an example for several generations in which he inspired the desire to know more about the history of their homeland and to be proud of its spiritual and cultural values.
To Perbes, in La Coruña, where Fraga Iribarne’s funeral will take place, will come numerous delegations from the whole country to express their solidarity with what he stood for. From a spiritual point of view, he was a militant Catholic, and the Spanish Church is also in mourning with his passing. This Monday, the Archbishop celebrated a Mass in Madrid’s cathedral for the repose of his soul which was attended by the most representative values of that city.
Hopefully, the Spaniards will know how to use all the positive things that Manuel Fraga Iribarne taught during his life.
