Security and Freedom in
Urban and Suburban Areas
For years now, without going into exact details, the people of the United States of America have been facing serious problems in the economic and social peace aspects of their lives. Much emphasis is placed on the economic because it has overwhelming aspects that have appeared swiftly. However, these aspects having to do with social peace, with collective security, have been going on for several years and are increasing exponentially. For example, the first few minutes, sometimes many, of a TV news program show horrific crimes of every nature that evidence an unimaginable lack of public safety.
When one thinks that the limits have been reached of what could be a crime against a newborn baby or an elderly person, passing through every stage of life, we are surprised by another unimaginable crime. For example, armed robberies have become commonplace any time of the day and night. The same thing happens with home invasions.
Statistics that sometimes show a decrease in crime do not truly reflect reality, although from a certain “scientific” point of view they might be true. But that truthfulness does not change the reality of the horrific crimes that are classified in different ways depending on the circumstances.
Authorities in charge of public order must multiply their efforts to fight crime which seriously affects the security of individuals, families and whole neighborhoods including, of course, parking lots in business centers. Uniformed police officers are needed to carry out that vigilance and, and this is very important, undercover police agents are needed to work finding crime hot spots that are usually in places where the use and sale of drugs is going on permanently and in considerable amounts. In other words, the police forces have to cover these two aspects, the one with uniformed agents and those who do not wear a uniform. Both are necessary, they complement each other.
It should be borne in mind, as something fundamental, that when there is no security there is, actually, no freedom. This is so because even though the authorities might not curtail freedom, it can not exist without their protection.
