On the 159th Anniversary of
a Cuban Glory, José Martí
When DIARIO LAS AMERICAS was founded on July 4, 1953, Cuba and also the world of freedom were celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of a great Cuban named José Martí.
At the time, this newspaper – as it has done always – encouraged every extolling of the merits of this immense Cuba who died gloriously in the battle of Dos Ríos on May 19, 1895. José Martí was born in Havana, on January 28th, 1853.
With good reason, Cubans of all times, even before their independence, fulfill their duty to emphasize the patriotic and cultural merits of this great figure named José Martí, who continues to receive, according to the characteristics of the times, the respectful homage of his people, that people which he bravely defended until death on May 19, 1895.
Since Cuba stopped being a republic in 1959, Miami has become the capital of the Cuban exile where many thousands of people coming from the island have sought asylum when they left after the entrenchment, with executions, plundering of private property and mass imprisonments, of the totalitarian Marxist-Leninist tyranny of Fidel and Raúl Castro, with the complicity of some who contributed, without any qualms, to consolidate the then fledging tyranny.
Logically, therefore, a date having to do with the glory and the memory of José Martí, is an opportunity to extol the merits of that figure of Cuba and of the world, something that must not be forgotten.
It is honoring for the Cubans in exile and also for those who in the island – as far as they are able to – can publicly honor Martí, this exemplary and patriotic attitude to do homage to this remarkable figure not only political but who had an outstanding participation in cultural endeavors, in terms of history, prose and poetry.
In a book titled “Los Raros” by Rubén Darío, the immortal Nicaraguan poet published a comprehensive and significant opinion about that great man whose name was José Martí.
