This Tuesday, January 31st, the Republican Party is holding its primary elections in the State of Florida. However, in Miami-Dade County two important changes to the Country’s Charter are presented to all voters.
All registered voters in Miami-Dade County, whether Republicans, Democrats or Independents should go to the polls on Tuesday to answer Yes or No to the two proposed changes.
The first question is about the term allowed to get signatures when someone wants to bring a question to the voters. Nowadays, only 60 days are allowed. The proposed change would allow 120 days to collect signature and this would make the work easier and there would be more opportunities to propose changes.
The second question has to do with the salary for Commissioners in Miami-Dade County. Now, Commissioners are paid $6,000 plus benefits. Logically, commissioners consider their jobs as “part time” and have other employment in order to make a living. There are also no limits to how many terms they might serve. The proposed change assigns them a salary of $92,000, which has been determined by the State based on the county’s population, and prohibits them for holding any other job. It also limits their terms to eight years, the same as the Mayor.
These two changes being proposed now are very important for the County’s future. That is why it is necessary that all registered voters vote on Tuesday, if they have not done so yet in early voting or with absentee ballots. It is possible that many voters registered as Democrats or Independents do not know that they should vote on Tuesday to answer Yes or No to these two County questions.

Abstention in any type of election is detrimental for the functioning of democracy. That is why this newspaper insists on the need that all voters go to the polls, unless a very powerful reason prevents them from doing so. We vote in different elections to choose those who are to represent us in the county, state, or federal governments. That is why it is so important that before voting the constituents study the characteristics of the candidates and their programs so that they can decide on the candidate who they consider is the best.
