We must insist on the need that when elections at different jurisdictional levels are held in a democracy, those who have the right to vote must understand that this right implies, also, an obligation.
It is neither patriotic, nor civic, nor political, that the citizen who has the right to vote does not do so in a conscientious way, thus strengthening the prevailing democratic system.
In the primary election of the Republican Party that has just ended in Florida there was a considerable enthusiasm and political interest evidenced by the number of voters who went to the polls to fulfill their duty to vote. Voting should not be considered only as an option, but also as a duty. In this way, election results have a positively political value and also symbolic value from the moral point of view. It is important that those who win know that they owe their victory to their fellow citizens. And those who lose know that they lost in a fair fight when the voters had an opportunity to choose among the candidates.
From every point of view elections should be considered as a wonderful and indispensable gymnastics with civic and political implications. In no way can it be said at the end of an election that it was a waste of time. The citizen whose vote was different from that of the majority should think about it and say to himself, “I did my duty. With my opposing vote I strengthened the political value of the election.”
Naturally, a well-informed citizen knows that although very important, a primary election is a transcendent step, but not a definitive one within the electoral process. Other states will be holding their primaries up to the end of August when the Republican Party will hold its Convention in Tampa. The results of all primaries are taken into consideration when it is time to decide who will be the Republican candidate who will run against President Barack Obama, who is seeking reelection in November. In September, although everyone knows who the candidate is, the Democratic Party proclaims his candidacy during its national convention.
