July 26th, a Day of Mourning for the Cuban People

Fifty-nine years ago, on July 26th, 1953, an attack on the Moncada Barracks in the Oriente Province of Cuba, was led by a young revolutionary agitator Fidel Castro with a band of eighty or ninety followers, according to the “History of the Isle of Cuba” authored by Drs. Carlos and Manuel Márquez Sterling. The attack failed but there were many casualties on both sides. This was the beginning of what, with the passing of time, would be a terrible tragedy for the Cuban people, climaxing with the takeover of power in Cuba by Fidel Castro in 1959, after some battles and skirmishes in the mountains of the Sierra Maestra and Escambray.

This bloody attack was planned to fail. However, it became the pedestal – so to speak – for the man who would become a guerrilla first and later an absolute dictator of what used to be the Republic of Cuba. Fidel Castro fled and sought shelter with the Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba, Monsignor Ernesto Pérez Serantes. After negotiations with the government of General Fulgencio Batista, Castro was arrested, convicted, and imprisoned. He was sentenced to fifteen years in prison but was later released under an amnesty granted by the government and ratified by Congress in 1955. Castro was treated with a tolerance and respect that he has never shown for his adversaries whom he has victimized in every imaginable way, from long prison terms to death by firing squads.

As a result of the communist conspiracy, there was an international effort to artificially legitimize the “26th of July Movement” until it took over power, in January 1959, with a totalitarian tyranny that in 1962 put the world on the brink of a nuclear holocaust with what was known as the “Missile Crisis.”

Those who in one way or another orient Cuban public opinion have much to analyze regarding this whole process – painful process – with the purpose of noting the huge mistakes that were made and doing everything possible so that nothing like this might take place in Cuba after the long dark night of this Marxist-Leninist totalitarian tyranny comes to an end.

July 26th, being the starting point of so much suffering, must be considered as an anniversary of mourning in the history of Marti’s homeland. May God save Cuba.
