Teaching Civics in the Schools


Studying science subjects in school certainly is very important and, more than important, necessary. In the same way it must be analyzed that there is an absence of certain fundamental subjects in the elementary and secondary school curricula, such as the case of civics, which shapes the citizen so that he or she may know how to live in terms of what his rights and duties are in society.

In very general terms, in American high schools something identified as “government” is taught, but that does not shape the student in terms of what is the fundamental civic life so that this individual – the student- may know what he must do or not do in the civic activities in society.

A youth that soon will be adults are being formed ignoring the basic elements of civic life which is what truly form a citizen in its sense of political knowledge. And when we say political this has nothing to do with specific political parties but is about a general awareness of what public life is all about.

Starting in elementary school, civic culture should be reasonably promoted in a methodical and orderly way. It is not a question of excluding the other subjects that are part of the general curricula, but of bringing to the conscience and mind of the children and youths some basic knowledge of what civic life is as a fundamental issue in the life of the citizens.

It is necessary that the leaders of society in general be concerned with this issue which is fundamental so that the new generations may know what it means to be a citizen and also know how to exercise their rights and obligations. It should be taken into account that it is indispensable that they learn about their obligations or duties so that they may know how to demand their rights. The correlation between rights and obligations is fundamental for the individuals in particular and society in general to perform.
