Recommendations for the Elections on Tuesday, August 14th

This Tuesday, August 14th, the state of Florida is having primary elections which also include local and county elections.

• Carlos Giménez for Miami-Dade County Mayor

A little over some twelve months ago, the now Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Carlos Giménez won the election for a period of approximately one year.

Obviously, in one year it is difficult to fix all the mistakes made by the county government during several years, mistakes that have cost the taxpayers billions of dollars. But, what indeed can be seen is a change of direction in governance and the policies of the present mayor. And in this sense we have seen the positive performance of the mayor and we consider that he deserves the opportunity of a full term to continue working on the serious fiscal problems and the administration of the County. Carlos Giménez has proved that he has the capacity and the will to face difficult situations and great obstacles.

For the above reasons, DIARIO LAS AMERICAS recommends to its readers to vote for Carlos Giménez for Mayor of Miami-Dade County.

• Pedro Garcia for Property Appraiser

Four years ago, county voters had the opportunity, for the first time, to elect a Property Appraiser, and they elected Pedro J. García. At that time DIARIO LAS AMERICAS recommended this candidate because of his qualifications in terms of fair appraisal of real estate properties.

García was falsely accused of wanting to force the residents of Miami to pay additional taxes on the garages for the baseball stadium. When consulted about a legal issue about taxes on the bad contract that the City of Miami negotiated with the Marlins, he concluded that by law the city had the duty to cover approximately one million dollars in taxes for these installations. The issue was solved later in Tallahassee by a Legislature that was more interested in favoring the Marlins and the Genting Group than in the serious problems affecting the people, such as the high cost of insurance in Florida; but this is a topic for another day.

The Appraiser’s job calls for great professionalism and knowledge about the true value of real estate and in this sense García has done great job.

DIARIO LAS AMERICAS recommends to its readers to vote for Pedro J. García for Property Appraiser.
