The Importance of Politics in the Life of the Nation

With good reason, there is considerable interest in these weeks in the United States of America about political events in the nation. The convention that the Republican Party has just ended in Tampa undoubtedly spurred this interest that will increase with the Democratic Party Convention that will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, from September 4th to the 6th.

It is significant that in these days national politics be present in a special way, not only because we are only sixty-five days away from the November 6th general election, but also because politics should be present at all times. Politics, within the normality of circumstances, should be a civic concern without falling into exaggerations that might weaken the importance of the issue. The national theme is always fundamentally political. And the national theme should, at all times, be part of the conscience and the interest of the country.

Speaking about the political theme, we must insist on the need that all the citizens should be aware of their duty to vote when local or national elections are held. A weak turnout in these elections proves an inexplicable lack of concern, almost a criminal one, for what elections represent in a democracy. The only basic opportunity that a citizen has to participate in the political life, except in special cases, is being present at the polls when the country holds elections be it at a municipal or a national level. And these elections are not sporadic, they are held regularly within the legal norms ruling on the subject.

In no way is it admissible that the people fail to vote when elections are held. The only fundamental way that the people have to participate in the political life of the nation is through elections. And if it is not the only way, it is the most significant one. Failing to vote is more than a huge indifference it could be said that is almost a crime.
