“Great Meeting” with
Barack Obama on Univision
On Thursday, September 20, 2012, the Univisión network broadcast a live-taped program from the Bank United Center of the University of Miami with President Barack Obama who is running for reelection. The “Meeting”, just as the one of the previous day with the Republican candidate, was titled “Education and its Future” and was hosted also by Jorge Ramos and María Elena Salinas.
This one-hour “Meeting” with Obama covered different topics and was characterized by the long replies of the candidate to the questions.
The first 20 minutes of the program dealt with questions about the Near and Middle East crisis and the events in Libya where the American Ambassador was killed who, apparently, had warned about the possibility of disturbances. The President could not give a convincing reason why the American embassies and consulates were not better prepared considering that it was the anniversary of 9/11.
Immigration was included in those first twenty minutes and both Jorge Ramos and María Elena Salinas pressured the President trying to get him to admit that he had not fulfilled the promise he made in 2008 of passing a comprehensive immigration reform during his first year in office. President Obama had no alternative but to admit that he had not fulfilled his promise, but he tried to justify it with the financial crisis that began just before his swearing into office and everything that he had to do to cope with the problem. He said that he had indeed held bipartisan meetings about immigration but that nothing positive came from this.
It was interesting that toward the end of the program the President said something similar to what Mitt Romney said in 2007. He said that in his almost four years in office he had learned that “you can not change Washington from the inside; it must be changed from the outside.”
During the program, Obama repeated many of the ideas that he states on a daily basis during his campaign stops in different states and which the television networks broadcast. He offered nothing new and emphasized that there is still much to do to improve the economy.
