Iran and Peace in the Near and Middle East

In his speech before the U.N. General Assembly, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, explained the danger for his country and for all of the Near and Middle East represented by the possibility that Iran make a nuclear weapon.

Netanyahu, with the aid of an illustration, detailed in what stage of uranium enrichment Iran was now and insisted on the need that the United State and its allies should clearly draw a “red line” indicating where Iran should stop its enrichment program. According to Netanyahu, Iran could be ready to make an atomic weapon by the spring or summer of 2013.

Up to now, the United Nations with the leadership of the United States, has imposed economic sanctions on Iran that, apparently, are affecting the country’s economy. But the sanctions have not yet persuaded the government in Tehran to suspend its nuclear efforts. In an internal report prepared by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, made public on September 27, by the newspaper Haaretz, it is said that Iran has suffered a 50 percent decline in its oil exports as a result of the sanctions imposed by the European Union and other countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea. And, as a result, Iran’s oil revenues have declined by $40 billion since the beginning of the year. The report concluded stating that “another round of sanctions is needed.”

On the other hand, President Obama has clearly stated that the problem with Iran must be solved through diplomacy and that there is still time to do so. Prime Minister Netanyahu insists on saying that time is running out. There are experts who believe that Iran would only use its nuclear weapons as a deterrent.

It is a matter of waiting to see if the sanctions could affect the Iranian regime to the point of bringing about a change in government, something that seems difficult due to the nature of that theocratic government where true power is held by the Ayatollahs.

The world must wait and carefully observe every move by the Iranian government which are seriously related to the cause of peace in that worrisome and menacing region.
