On the One Hundred and Forty-Fourth Anniversary of the Cry of Yara

One hundred and forty-four years ago, Cuban patriots led by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes – fittingly called Father of the Country – began an uprising which has been recorded in history as the Cry of Yara, thus beginning the long War of Ten Years in the quest of independence for the Cuban nation.

Those ten years did not end with victory, but they were necessary to pave the way for the second war of independence, which began in 1895 and whose main ideologue was Jose Martí and its military leader Generalissimo Máximo Gómez, Dominican by birth, who had also fought in the mentioned war of 1868. The war of 1895 ended, coinciding with the Spanish-American War, with Cuba’s independence.

For fifty-seven years, until January 1, 1959, Cuba was, with its virtues and defects, a republic that sank into the terrible sea of the totalitarian Marxist-Leninist tyranny of Fidel Castro. Now, Martí’s homeland is not a republic nor is there the rule of law. It could not be a republic, but enjoy the rule of law. Of course, what the patriots dreamed about, what they fought for, was for a republic.

Throughout the process preceding October 10, 1868 and during that heroic war, there are wonderful lessons for the Cuban people of all times, having to do with being proud of their love for freedom and of the sacrifices that must be made to achieve it although, we repeat, that ten-year war of 1868 did not end in independence. But the seed was sowed in the fertile soil of Cuban patriotism.

Although at each stage in the history of nations, circumstances change, there are always substantial elements that last throughout the years and that should be used, with the proper adaptations, to achieve goals of independence, of freedom and of democracy. Thus, it would be wrong not to use those historic examples, what those efforts meant, although in the present struggle to recover independence and liberty conditions might be different. What is fundamental is the certainty that Cubans have the capacity to adapt their noble endeavors to restore their abducted republic. Of course, it is a known fact that, disguised in a thousand ways, there is a huge international conspiracy against Cuba’s freedom which is trying to shore up, directly or covertly, Castro’s totalitarian tyranny.

DIARIO LAS AMERICAS reiterates today its loyalty to the supreme cause of Cuba’s liberty.
