October 12, 1492, a
Glorious Date for Mankind
Every October 12th, the civilized world celebrates another anniversary of the Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, a transcendent feat that took place in 1492. This historic date also marks the celebration of the Virgin of Pilar of Zaragoza (Spain) that is worshiped not only in Spain but also in all the Latin American countries that receive the generous influence of the Motherland on an anniversary such as this one.
Christopher Columbus had the vision for this effort and he succeeded in having the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, give him their support that was indispensable for this formidable goal. Without the tenacity of the Catholic Monarchs, without their determination to contribute everything needed for this discovery, that October 12 of 1492 ,when the New World was discovered would have been impossible.
In the course of events in the lands discovered across the Atlantic, although at the time no one knew where they were, began the conquest, with virtues and defects, which brought Spanish civilization to the mentioned New World. There were conflicts with the native population that at the time was being mistreated by the high hierarchies of the prevailing regimes, which can not be compared with what they might have suffered because of the conquerors’ arbitrariness. That arbitrariness was compensated – although in many cases not justified – with what the Spaniards brought with religion, culture, and a whole civilization. The Spanish conquerors, few in numbers at the beginning, with a constructive spirit, founded big cities, universities, hospitals, and monumental churches that have defied the passing of time and are still admired by the world.
In the new continent there already existed marvelous native structural works that today still bear witness to a civilization that was beginning to disappear in different regions. And it was disappearing because of internal feuding among tribes that had made important material accomplishments but were engaged in conflicts that often had characteristics of cruelty.
DIARIO LAS AMERICAS, on this October 12th, reiterates its devotion to what this anniversary represents in the historic as well as the religious, with profound roots in the Latin American nations.
