Vote NO for Amendments 3, 4, and 5 to the Florida Constitution

As it is known, the ballot for the general election of November 6th includes eleven Constitutional Amendments that need to be approved by 60% of the voters in order to be in force.

We consider that some of these amendments should not be included in the Constitution but that instead should be laws passed by the Legislature and then sent to the Governor for his approval. We now make more recommendations:

Amendment 3 deals with State Government Revenue Limitation and tries to limit government expenditures by limiting the amount of money that the government can receive by connecting the budgets to inflation and population. We already limit the growth in expenditures connecting it with the growth of personal income. This amendment would tie the hands of the Legislature when dealing with budgets and services. We recommend voting NO for Amendment 3.

Amendment 4 is about Property Tax Limitations; Property Value Decline; Reduction for Nonhomestead Assessment Increases; Delay of Scheduled Repeal. This is the longest and most complex of the amendments and, in our opinion, would cause more inequity in property taxes than we now have. We recommend voting NO for Amendment 4.

Amendment 5 refers to State Courts. This amendment would give the Legislature more control over the Supreme Court of Florida, allowing them to overturn a court’s rules and procedures with a simple majority vote and requires Senate confirmation of judges. This amendment would unnecessarily politicize the Supreme Court of Florida. We recommend voting NO for Amendment 5.

In another article we will finish making our recommendations for Constitutional Amendments.

DIARIO LAS AMERICAS reiterates to its readers how important it is to vote in a democracy and urges them to vote in this election which is crucial for the future of the nation. Any of the two presidential candidates who wins will face an extremely difficult domestic and international situation and will have to lead the country with a very steady hand.
