The Importance of Municipalities

The importance of municipal jurisdictions is so great, that it merits that the citizens in each of those municipalities be concerned with the way in which it is run. They should begin by showing the local authorities that this concern exists and that there is a vigilance that encourages the better operation of each municipality, large or small.

In the periodic meetings of municipal authorities these should feel that they are being watched – so to speak – which is evident by the presence of important members of the community that attend the meetings held to decide, one way or another, what the municipality is going to do.

The operation of the municipal administration should be a concern – we repeat – of those individuals who are best qualified to analyze how a city functions. For example, everything having to do with the general expense budget should be analyzed to the best of the abilities of each person. It should be taken into consideration that in a municipality there are many expenditures that are not irregular, but that are unnecessary, and it is a duty of the public to let the authorities know what their opinion is on the subject after attending the municipal sessions.

In every municipal election the voters must observe and carefully analyze the characteristics of the candidates running for office. Likewise, when one notices that among the candidates some very worthy people are not running for office, everything possible should be done to convince those individuals to run for the good of the municipality.

Those who are co-owners of a municipality, through the properties that they have there, whether commercial or residential, should take pride in their city. In the measure in which there is a reasonable pride with respect to their municipality, those who live and work there or those who only live there and work elsewhere, will be interested in the good operation of that municipality letting this be known to the authorities that were elected to these posts.
